Programme „TANGO !“

During their 20 years of touring, Quadro Nuevo has been on a quest to find the very soul of Tango.

The intrepid Virtuosi have travelled to countless places, boldly sounded out more adventurous ways of playing and have been rewarded twice with the ECHO for their efforts.

In early 2014, they packed up their instruments once again: no tour this time, but an expedition into the Buenos Aires summer.

They moved into an old villa in the city, rehearsing daily in the sizzling midday heat, then swarmed out in the evening, diving head over heels into the nocturnal scene, rubbing elbows with Argentinian musicians, accompanying dancers; they encountered famous Tangueros and crazy street poets, talked until dawn and got drunk on heady wine and fresh tango direct from the source.

All of these experiences merged into their music, culminating in the new Quadro Nuevo Album „TANGO !

Programme „Quadro Nuevo - End of the Rainbow“

How do you reach the end of the rainbow?

A realist would say: not at all
A philosopher would say: through your imagination
A priest would say: by faith
A crook would say: give me some money and I’ll show you
A mother would say: in your dreams
A child would say: that’s easy!
A fool would say: beyond the next hill, that’s where it must be, I can see it
A musician would say: just listen

Quadro Nuevo invites their audience to join them on a magic carpet ride to the legendary end of the rainbow. Tangos, beguiling arabesques, melodies from old Europe - presented with grandeur yet intensely intimate; almost forgotten songs too precious to be lost to oblivion, captivating gems such as Charles Trenet’s "Que reste-t-il de nos amours", or the profound "Tango del Mare". The breathtaking intensity of Astor Piazzolla meets the sensual virtuosity and passion with which the four globe-trotting musicians bring unique adventure to the here and now.

After completing the successful World Music Tour Grand Voyage, Quadro Nuevo returns once again to their abiding passion for tango. The treasure to be found at the end of the rainbow isn’t a pot of gold, but the joyous exuberance heard in every note.

The end of the rainbow is where you can perceive beauty without needing to grasp it.

Programme „Grand Voyage“

Songs of a Grand Voyage

Each one of Quadro Nuevo’s songs transports us to a different part of the world and carries within it the pure atmosphere of that particular place:

a wild ride across the harsh Crimean peninsula, London’s old world charm, the lightness of the Mediterranean, a Tango from New York, crazy days in Istanbul, a night of revelry in Transylvania, secret gardens in Malaysia, warm rain in Paris.

But sometimes even the most arduous of journeys doesn’t bring us to where we want to be and the tone poem “Die Reise nach Batumi” (Journey to Batumi) is, above all, a story of that which is denied us. What remains is longing.

Four suitcases full of melodies, bursting with impressions and encounters, overflowing with exhilarating experiences and the joy of making music.

The music of Quadro Nuevo, gleaned here and there, yesterday and today, tells of the vagabond life of four wanderers moved between the winds of west and east.

Starting out with their own distinctly European-flavored brand of Tango, the musicians continued to embellish their tone poetry with arabesques, Balkan swing, delicate ballads and daredevil improvisations, all performed with the Mediterranean lightness that has long become their trademark.

Since 1996, the instrumental quartet has given over 2500 concerts on every continent. Passionate and diversified “music junkies”, they play in Jazz clubs and at international festivals, as street musicians on the Piazzas of southern Europe, take the stage by storm as a late-night Tango dance band and, as a concert ensemble, perform in famous venues such as New York’s Carnegie hall.

As well as climbing into the Jazz and World Music Top Ten, their CDs have received the German Jazz Award and, in Paris, the European Phono Award.
The Echo, the German Phono Academy’s highest distinction, was presented to Quadro Nuevo in both 2010 and 2011 in the category “Jazz/World Music, Best Live Act”.

Ensemble „Quadro Nuevo“

Quadro Nuevo is the European answer to the Argentine tango

Arabesques, Balkan swing, ballads, daredevil improvisations, the melodies of old Europe and the lightness of the Mediterranean merge into fabulous songs full of joyous colour.
These melodies tell of the vagabond life, of experiences and encounters on this great journey of life, of small coincidences and great moments, of tenderness and wild temperament driven between the winds of east and west, caught between consuming yearning and joyful fulfillment – between the bitter and the sweet.

Quadro Nuevo has been touring the globe since 1996 and has given over 3000 concerts. Over the course of time the quartet has established its own form of melodic poetry beyond all genre pigeon holes, unmistakably shaped by the passionate love of the instrument and the joy of making music. The secret is devotion and it is a rare experience to hear music performed with so much excitement, verve and empathy with cultures not ones own.
The Quartet’s venues are as diverse as the roots of their music and are not limited to concert halls and festivals. Quadro Nuevo’s ardent virtuosi are just as much at home busking on the piazzas of southern Europe or, as a night-time tango band, enticing audiences to dance. They have taken to the stage in jazz clubs and in locations as famous as New York’s Carnegie Hall. As well as climbing into the Jazz and World Music Top Ten, their CDs have received the German Jazz Award and, in Paris, the European Phono Award.
In both 2010 and 2011, Quadro Nuevo was awarded The Echo, the German Phono Academy’s highest distinction, in the category “Jazz/World Music, Best Live Act”.

History:
The group Quadro Nuevo was born on a grey January day in 1996 when four young musicians met for the first time on a parking lot near Salzburg.

The four, who had only vaguely heard of each other before then, had been commissioned to produce a movie score for the Austrian TV station ORF. The fee for the recording was subsequently blown in the local Casino and the film was never broadcast, but one thing became clear on that day: a new quartet with an unmistakable sound had been born. Quadro Nuevo. The love of nostalgic acoustic music, traveling together all over the world, evening after evening, from stage to stage is a like dream come true and this exuberance can be heard every note.

The quartet has performed at numerous renowned festivals such as the Montreal Jazz Festival, the International Burghausen Jazz Weeks, the Rheingau Music Festival, Meran Music Weeks, Saalfelden Jazz Days, the Ollinkan Festival, Mexico City and the Quebec Festival. As well as these, there have been concert tours to Singapore, Korea, Canada, the U.S., Australia, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, England, France, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Turkey, Tunisia, Romania, Israel and the Baltic States.

Quadro Nuevo provided the music for the audio book of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s “Italian Journey”, read by Ulrich Tukur, Ulrike Kriener and Frank T. Zumbach as well as for the audio book of the fairytale “The King Laughed”, written by Julie Fellmann and narrated by Udo Wachtveitl.

Programme „Tango bitter sweet“

Magnetic melodies from Europe – wild temperament driven between easterly and westerly winds, between ardent desire and joyful fulfilment. Between the bitter and the sweet.

This is the world of the tango, as played by Quadro Nuevo.

The instrumental quartet has long since established its own form of poetical sound, beyond the genre stereotypes.
Based on European formed tango, Quadro Nuevo enriches this musical direction with elements of Flamenco, Valse Musette, Balkan swing, Oriental music, daring improvisations and an incomparable Mediterranean sense of ease.

On their latest album tango bitter sweet euphoric classics like “Petite Fleur“, ”Tango Jalousie“ or the sabre dance blossom in fresh, opalescent colours. Almost forgotten melodies once again touch the senses, make butterflies dance on the skin and send a yearning to the heart.
These mix with electrifying self-compositions, recounting tales from the vagabond life of the four virtuosi.

The unmistakable sound of Quadro Nuevo resounds on this CD too:
Sensual as the summer nights on the Mediterranean Sea, compelling as passion, bitter-sweet as lovesickness.

Even the 1970s hits like Dalida’s “Paroles, Paroles“ or ”L’été indien“ from Joe Dassin are filled with so much personal flair that one hardly wants to let them go.

The secret is devotion. Seldom has one experienced that music is performed with so much excitement, verve, almost tender love of the instrument and empathy with foreign cultures.

Quadro Nuevo has been distinguished by the German Phono Association with fifteen Jazz Awards and has received the European Impala three times. Their albums have been number one in the World Music Charts, Top Ten of the Jazz Charts and have reached the Top 50 of the German Album Charts.
The Echo, the German Phono Academy’s highest distinction, was presented to Quadro Nuevo in both 2010 and 2011 in the category “Jazz/World Music, Best Live Act”.

The four musicians have been touring the countries of the world for ten years and have so far given around 2500 concerts. Their venues are as diverse as the roots of their music: The nostalgic-acoustic ensemble not only appears in concert halls and at festivals. The sounds of Quadro Nuevo permeate like the comforting aroma of freshly ground coffee. Savouring the captivating experience, the listener is led into a world of swaying turbans, old taverns and passionate tango.

Programme „Canzone della Strada“

In its programme Canzone della Strada Quadro Nuevo explores old Italian tango and lyrical canciones.
Music of an Italy almost lost in time, once so enchantingly presented by long forgotten singers of the likes of Carlo Buti, Nilla Pizzi, and Claudio Villa. Visions of the South, firing the melancholic fantasy yearning in North and Central Europeans since time immemorial, are awoken by their songs.
These take their place next to temperamental Neapolitan street hits and daring improvisations.
Quadro Nuevo drew its ideas and inspiration from long trips through Italy.
Musical jewels pickup up from the streets and squares of Mediterranean towns.

The CD released in 2002 Quadro Nuevo : Canzone della Strada records this musical dream. It was distinguished with the German Jazz Award and the Impala European Phono Award and climbed into the Top Ten of the Jazz and World Music Charts. [...]
